Our Mission:

The Junior League of Bergen County, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.

Our History:

The Junior League of Bergen County, Inc. originally started in 1928 and was admitted to the Association of Junior Leagues in 1933. During our tenure as an organization we have helped tens of thousands of members of our community.  JLBC past projects that have contributed to our successful large-scale community impact include:

• Founding the Volunteer Center of Bergen County, which today is a free-standing non-profit organization that supports 60 local groups and is the county’s “go-to place” for matching volunteers with agencies in need.
• In conjunction with Children’s Aid and Family Services we created and purchased a home in Ridgewood NJ to establish Woodlea House, a stable group home for teen girls from dysfunctional or abusive families.
• Starpower! was a collaborative workshop that we created and delivered for adolescent girls and their parent/guardian which focused on key issues such as self esteem, bullying, cliques and internet safety. 

The League Today:

Our current membership is comprised of a diverse group of about 200 women from Bergen, and the surrounding counties, who are all united by the core tenets of our mission.  Together, we deliver thousands of volunteer hours to our community through various programs, while also maintaining a focus on the training and development of our members, enabling and empowering them to make an even great impact! Our community involvement includes: 

Done in a Day:

Done in a Day is a program that allows our organization to deliver immediate impact to the community through projects that can be accomplished by our members in one day.  Last year we completed over a dozen Done in a Day projects impacting approximately 500 members of the community.  A small sampling of DIAD projects we held in the last year include:

• Refurbishing a living room and an adjoining common room in a safe house for women and children
• Preparing and serving a meal at a local homeless shelter
• Providing holiday craft activities for children in a foster group home
• Providing Thanksgiving Dinner to a dozen families in need including turkeys and all the trimmings
• Providing fun games and activities along with snacks and prizes to lonely nursing home clients
• Developing a Kindness Rocks campaign to brighten people’s day

Current Large Scale Community Project:

In April 2018, we launched our newest community project, “Set Sail – Navigating from Dependence to Independence”.  This initiative is the first in our new focus on resilience education and training for at-risk populations in our community.  Our initial roll-out community partner for this project is CUMAC (www.cumac.org) and we will be specifically focused within their “Pathways to Work” program to build and deliver a training curriculum to enable their patrons to re-enter or enter the workforce. CUMAC serves 30,000 individuals annually and because this is a new program/partnership for the JLBC our impact will be measured after the first year.

Leadership Training:

Another way we impact our community is through training our membership (and the community) to be effective leaders and volunteers.  This is perhaps our area of greatest impact as the ripple effect of what we do here goes on and on and touches community members we will never know about.  We believe that trained volunteers are the most effective in the community and this is a core value for the JLBC.  All our members participate in training annually (200+ individuals). We also offer trainings to the public (impacting 100+ annually). A few of our most popular community trainings last year were on LinkedIn (Are you getting LinkedIn to the right opportunities?), Vision Board Workshop for goal-planning (community and corporate trainings took place) and To Lead is To Serve (attended by numerous non-profit partners in addition to community members).
