Marie Sturken Art Auction:
A Benefit for Star Island

NEW ITEMS HAVE BEEN ADDED!!!!!

From October 19 - November 1, 2020, Star Island Corporation will auction off 36 original works by recognized artist and long-time Shoaler Marie Sturken, who passed away in 2018. These pieces were donated by the Sturken Family to raise money for Star Island during this historically challenging year for Our Spirit's Home. 100 percent of the proceeds will go to Star Island.  The Sturken family will donate the cost of shipping and ship the works to successful bidders free of charge.

Marie was a highly successful artist of printmaking and handmade paper. After working as a fashion illustrator, drawing models for A&S and Wanamakers in the 1940s, she pursued a career as a fine artist.  After working in oil painting, Marie took up printmaking, joining a group of artists studying under prominent printmaker Judith Brodsky.  She began working in monotypes and handmade paper which remained her primary media throughout her later career. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Princeton University, the New Jersey State Museum, and the Hunterdon Museum of Art, among others.  A retrospective of her work was held at Rider University in 2015. A founding member of the Princeton Artists Alliance, she taught printmaking and lithography at the Princeton Art Association and handmade paper at the Printmaking Council of New Jersey. With her husband Bob she was an active and devoted member of the Princeton Unitarian Universalist Congregation for over 50 years.

Marie was an enthusiastic Shoaler, first coming to All Star I and II in 1965, and last coming to All Star I in 2014.  She loved to do watercolors on the rocks, and linoleum cuts of island images.  One of her linoleum cuts of the Summer House is now on permanent display in the lobby of the Oceanic Hotel.
