A recent study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found that children who are not reading proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to experience academic failure than their peers who are proficient readers.

Unlike their counterparts in more affluent communities many children in areas we serve don’t have the benefit of having books at home - someone reading to them - someone encouraging them to read.

By first grade a middle-class child will spend over 1,700 hours reading with an adult.  A low-income child will spend 25.

Family engagement plays a critical role in the development of literacy skills and long-term school success.

60% of low-income families do not have a book in their home.

When children have this support, they excel in the classroom. When they do not, the academic deficits not only grow, but persist over their school careers.

If we want to give every child the chance to succeed from the beginning we need your support.
