FUND A PROGRAM- PS Arts

Theater & Movement Program Description

The Theater & Movement Program represents a dynamic and physical approach to teaching and learning in the theater arts. Students will study movement and theater as a way to explore physical and mental concentration that will enable them to use their bodies and emotions creatively. Students will also be introduced to fun theater games, improvisation and storytelling lessons that encourage self-expression, ensemble work and active participation. Students will have the opportunity to explore basic theater concepts including focus, choreography, using the body to express emotion, vocal projection and articulation, developing a character and beginning playwriting. Through the exposure of experiential teaching methods, students will understand such concepts as awareness, intention, centering, interpretation and the connection between mind and body.

The Theater & Movement Program culminates in an informance, a small in-class performance, where students are able to showcase the skills they’ve learned over the course of the year. Students share with parents what they’ve learned about the fundamentals of movement and theater, while they experience on a small-scale what it’s like to stage a show. The Teaching Artist can use a pre-written, age and grade level appropriate script or excerpts from scripts, work with classroom teachers to adapt a classroom story or concept into a short play or have students write a short play of their own creation to share with parents in an informal setting.
