Fund A Need 2019: World Language & Global Citizenship

Help fund the World Language & Global Citizenship programs at Encinal, Laurel, Oak Knoll, and Hillview!

All four of our fabulous schools offer world language and global citizenship learning opportunities for all students. In K-5, the students receive at least 60 minutes a week of Spanish instruction. In the middle school, the students have an opportunity to choose French, Spanish or advanced Spanish. Additionally, there are school-wide activities students participate in to build awareness and empathy for other cultures including: Spanish cooking lessons, celebrating dia de los muertos through song and art, honoring all mothers during el dia de la madre or listening to stories about famous historical Latino and Spanish people.

These opportunities directly support MPCSD’s mission to inspire high academic achievement, challenge students’ minds, enrich their lives by building a child’s foundational knowledge of other cultures, and lay a foundation for success and participation as citizens of the world.

Your donation, at any level you feel comfortable, helps support the following needs:

$5,000 funds:  Professional development for all K-8 language teachers: opportunities for collaboration among schools, colleagues and other World Language teachers outside of the district; funds for teachers to attend conferences on cutting edge language instruction strategies or to bring experts to our schools to train our teachers.  

$3,500 funds:  A one-year stipend for one (1) Amity intern assigned to a Spanish immersion class to assist our schools’ World Language teachers and model language. Includes funds to provide the intern with a SamTrans pass and bike/helmet so they are able to safely travel to their school site.

$2,500 funds:  Global author or singer in-person visit to one school site to present all students with a performance of their artwork and culture.  Examples include: Cuban percussionists, Ballet Folklorico, or authors Jose Luis Orozco and Elizabeth Gomez.

$1,000 funds:  Off-site field trip for one class of students to a Cultural destination, including bus transportation and other fees.  Examples include: Precita Park Murals and Mexican Museum, Legion of Honor, and Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana.

$750 funds:  Supplies and materials for a school-wide Cultural Arts Fair at each elementary school to highlight the culture of another country.

$500 funds:  Supplies and ingredients for a Cultural Culinary Experience for students at one school.  Examples of supplies: hand/stand mixer, cooking lessons, recipe ingredients from a local ethnic market and scheduling an ethnic food truck to attend a school community event.

$250 funds:  Resource books for teachers and students to enhance second language learning, stimulate learning and promote a deeper understanding of authentic language instruction. Examples include: books by authors Helena Curtain, Bill Van Patten and Stephen Krashen.

$100 funds:  World Language and Global Citizenship lesson supplies for one classroom. Examples: puppets for dramatic play, art supplies for a French impressionist painting study, board games in French and Spanish, pen pal writing supplies, cultural arts mural installation supplies, face painting supplies for Day of the Dead.
