Not many photographers can say that Tom Waits taught them how to process and print their first role of film. But Scott Smith can. He and Waits met in San Diego in late 1968 and became friends "based on our shared love of music, noir novels, movies, making each other laugh and photography."
"I documented much of Tom's San Diego folk circuit days," recalls Smith, "and he asked me if I would shoot some shots for a possible album cover for Looking For the Heart of Saturday Night (released in 1974).
This particular image was taken late at night in downtown L.A. Tom and I were both drawn like moths to the neon and we spent several days roaming the city and scouting locations that would capture the mood of the music.
I think we both drew on our love of James Ellroy and other noir L.A. writers. We had a lot of fun, and one of the things that I like about my shots is that Tom was really relaxed: there was no pressure, just two friends out shooting some film."
For Scott Smith's photograph of Eric Clapton in performance, see Item 25.
