Hailing from Virginia and New York, as well as California’s three prolific wine regions, American red wines are stars from coast to coast. On a recent visit and tasting of Virginia wines, British wine critic, journalist and wine writer, Jancis Robinson referred to many of them as “thrillingly good.” The Empire State has five diverse wine growing areas, 1,631 vineyards and 390+ wineries.
While California winemakers do craft wines in more "Old World" or European wine styles, most Californian wines favor simpler, more fruit dominant New World styles. The reliably warm weather allows this and also creates the opportunity for higher alcohol levels with many Californian wines having over 13.5 percent alcohol content.
