GEORGIA MERTCHING IS DEAD

Mar. 6- Mar. 31, 2019

written by Catya McMullen
directed by Giovanna Sardelli*

Gretchen, Emma and Whitney are thirty. They've been friends since they were teenagers. They've been sober since they were teenagers. As they set off on a road trip south--with homemade female urination devices, too much pie, ill-advised sexual escapades--to celebrate and mourn a figure from their past, GEORGIA MERTCHING IS DEAD reveals what it's like to face adulthood and death after growing up weird and possibly broken.

Catya McMullen is a playwright, tv and screenwriter, and comedian. Her short play, MISSED CONNECTION won the 37th Samuel French OOB Short Play Festival, was directed by Leslye Headland and is published by Samuel French. She writes for AMC's hit show Dietland and is the author of the comedic hip hop musical LOCKED UP BITCHES (World Premiere, The Flea) and the plays GEORGIA MERTCHING IS DEAD (Upcoming World Premiere EST/Youngblood), AGNES (Upcoming World Premiere Lesser America at 59E59 Fall 2018, Workshop Production, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater), EVERYTHING IS PROBABLY GOING TO BE OKAY, WE PRAY TO ELEPHANTS, ASSHOLES IN GAS STATIONS, RUBBER DUCKS AND SUNSETS (World Premiere Ground UP Productions), and THE COLLECTIVE (World Premiere, Triskellion Arts) along with numerous shorts. She is a proud alum of the Obie award winning EST/Youngblood and a company member of The Middle Voice Theater Company; the apprentice company of Rattlestick Playwrights Theater. She was a finalist for the City Theater National Award for Short Playwriting and is the Creator of the WE ARE ANIMALS series, a quarterly variety show series she writes with Scott Klopfenstein of the Gold Record selling band Reel Big Fish, where she raps under her feminist hip hop alias ?Chihuahua Fancy.? She has received multiple commissions from the Sloan Foundation and is currently writing a play about back alley abortions given in the years before Roe V. Wade. She teaches sketch comedy and playwriting at The People's Improv Theater. She has been produced or developed work with Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, EST/Youngblood, The People's Improv Theater, The Lark Play Development Center, Lesser America, Naked Angels, The Flea Theater, The F*it Club, Rising Phoenix Rep, Playmakers Repertory Company, Ground UP Productions, Ugly Rhino, and Primary Stages.
