Description

This framed photo art print was taken by Murphy Munday at Mount Erebus, Antarctica in the year 2012. The photo itself is 16? x 20?, includes a white matte with a white frame, and is ready to hang.

In 2012, Murphy Munday went on an adventure of a lifetime, and spent seven weeks in Antarctica. She was traveling as a photo assistant with a National Science Foundation Artist & Writer Grantee. Primarily stationed at McMurdo base, Murphy's job was to travel the continent via helicopter, snow machine, people-mover, cargo planes, skis, and foot to help the Artist Grantee photograph the vast variety of beautiful landscapes that Antarctica has to offer. Murphy visited the South Pole, saw several penguin and seal habitats and colonies, did an actual Polar Plunge in 34 degree sea-water, slept outside in a self-built ice cave in -67 degree Fahrenheit weather, delighted in 24 hours of daylight and so much more! If you?ve ever seen Warner Herzog?s film ?Encounters at the End of the World?, this was very close to Murphy?s experience.

About the experience of taking this photograph:

Mount Erebus is the southernmost active volcano on Earth and is located on Ross Island, Antarctica. On this particular day, November 5, 2012, a group of 3 women, myself included, were piloted via helicopter up and around Mount Erebus Volcano. We took photos while looking down at the steaming spout at the top of the volcanic crater and all around the treacherous mountain, taking in as much of the incredible details and surrounding landscape that time would allow. We were dropped off (while the helicopter remained active), on a fairly flat space on the mountain at approximately 9,000 ft above sea level. As the helicopter pilot flew away, the silence up on that mountain was powerful. It was just the 3 of us, the only living souls on top of this active volcano. We hiked up another 500 ft or so, while I carried about 65 lbs. of photo equipment, wearing 5 layers of extreme-weather warm clothing, with every inch of skin covered. It was exhausting! The high altitude, very thin air, blinding sunlight, and steep incline were a great challenge for me. We spent about 3 hours on Mount Erebus, before the helicopter pilot returned to pick us up (?GET TO DA CHOPPER!?-style). I remember my air-filled ?bunny boots? expanding and contracting due to the quick altitude changes in the helicopter as we returned to home base at McMurdo. This photograph represents a view that is etched into my memory. Such an incredible experience! One that I am very proud to share today and always.
