Lauren Naomi--hand-sculpted, hand-painted roses

For over 15 years I have sculpted, painted, and arranged thousands of watercolor-washed clay rose petals on sprawling wall-hung, suspended and free-standing structures to create vibrant and contemplative works that are metaphors for the human condition. Thematic explorations illustrate the beauty found within each unique individual, as well as how those individuals coexist within the larger community, initiating a dialogue of personal awareness within a larger social context. Immersed in the thread-embroidered, paper-sculpted and live planted gardens from prior generations of my family, I witnessed the connection between nature and well-being at an early age and absorbed the link between the two. Flowers define our family crest. I begin with a hand-shaped petal I?ve pulled from a hearty ball of clay. I continue sculpting more petals until I?ve built an entire rose, pulling, smashing, rolling, and stretching clay petals against a surface like brush strokes to create blooms of varying degrees of expression and implied movement. From flimsy, wilted petals to swaying, dancing blossoms, petals are combined to form letters or words or left in abstraction as a secret garden. Sculpting with only my hands and body impressions, I honor the most primitive expressions of art. In line with ancient painting techniques, sculpture is then dipped repeatedly in watercolor baths and dried. Once the clay is set, like weeding a garden with tweezer precision, I meticulously perfect the piece, a process that evokes the attentive maternal nature of mammals in the wild grooming their young. This intimate attention to detail resonates with me as I prepare the work in its final phase ready to depart from my studio.
