Born in the state of Oregon, Ms. Newberry studied art at the University of Oregon, School of the Portland Art Museum, the California School of Fine Arts, and La Grand Chaumiere in Paris, France. Her drawings come from her own life experiences, her family, friends, and pets. Her most famous depcitions are of cats and kittens, as represented by the pieces on display in the Mishawaka Penn Harris Public Library. Four of Newberry's books were runners-up for the Caldecott Medal.
