Mixed media sculpture

Based on the work of Artist of the Month Joe Brubaker
Melvin is known to all as the artist in residence who brought puppets to SFDS. In addition to being our school's favorite puppeteer, he also teaches woodworking and Art Forts. His secret belief that anything can be a puppet has changed many lives.
Karen’s work is often inspired by universal symbols found in early cultures about the world. She uses these shapes and patterns to create her own modern-day icons and myth. Karen incorporates these ideas when working with clay and metal to create functional and sculptural works. Teaching art at SFDS for many years has exposed her to the techniques and stories of over 300 artists, influencing both her own work and that of the department team of art educators. This piece carries the equal distant cross that represents relationship, connection, and collaboration - appropriate themes for SFDS. This piece was inspired by Kuna Indians of Panama textiles called molas.
