Item Description
This second grader "Count-Me-In" party will combine fun, learning, and teamwork!
On Monday, June 4th, directly after school, 15 second graders will learn about how homelessness affects kids and their education. Held at a Nueva family's residence in Hillsborough, a representative from San Francisco-based Children of Shelters "COS" will lead a short, interactive discussion with the kids.
Afterwards, Mari Duffy and second grade parents Saraleah Fordyce and Jenise Henrikson will lead the kids in assembling "Birthday in a Box" kits that will be delivered (along with a cake) by COS to kids celebrating birthdays in shelters. The kit includes new PJs, a new book, candles, hats, and party favors!
When the kits are delivered to kids, the entire shelter community comes together to celebrate with the children. The smiles and joyful singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ brightens the shelters and helps each child feel normalcy and a positive sense of childhood.
At the end of the day, we'll celebrate our work with a pizza party.
At pick up, parents are encouraged to drop off newborn supplies! Newborns in homeless families are especially vulnerable. COS will distribute the donations to the families that need them.
Date: June 4, 2018
