Item Description
Even when an elephant is starved, it is abuse but when overfed unhealthy food items, that also counts as abuse. Laxmi was rescued from Maharashtra in 2013 as a begging elephant whose exhausting routine involved walking endlessly on hot, tarred and busy roads of the city. At the young age of 18 years, Laxmi suffered from a serious condition of severe osteoarthritis due to her unproportionately gained weight that caused severe stress on her legs. Laxmi would be fed fried food and sweets, eating as much as 100 burgers in a day, everyday! When Laxmi was brought to the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre, in Mathura, our veterinarians put her on a strict diet where her weight had to be managed so that her legs do not suffer anymore. Along with this, she would spend relaxing time in the pool in her enclosure that would largely help the relief course through her veins. Munching on green vegetables and fodder, Laxmi's condition has remarkably improved.
