Item Description

Women on the Rise! (WOTR!) partners with 11 organizations serving at-risk teenagers. MOCA provides instructors and contemporary artists as role models to this underserved population (such as the residents of the Miami Juvenile Justice Facilities, COPE alternative high school for teenage mothers, Job Corps of Homestead and Miami.) Each partnering organization receives at least 8 lessons per year and up to 2 field trips to MOCA.

The cost of the program is approximately $15,000 per location. As you can imagine most organizations do not have arts education in their budgets. However, WOTR! has been proven to increase participants critical thinking skills, self esteem and overall outlook making them arts advocates, productive members of society and promoting life-long learning. Participants in this program learn to assert their voices by arming them with critical thinking skills, a new vocabulary and an expanded perspective of history that includes contemporary artists with similar cultural backgrounds and experiences of their own. They become inspired to overcome life challenges and fulfill their own potential. Many create powerful works of art and writings through the high-quality, hands-on, multi-media arts WOTR! workshops.

In 2008, MOCA was approached by two Job Corps Centers (JCC) in Homestead and Miami to continue WOTR!'s successful program model of gender-specific answers to the social problems at their facilities. This partnership with Job Corps reaches an increased age range of 16-24 year olds and includes young men, a pilot endeavor for the program. The program for males is called Art Corps @ Job Corps and is also gender specific with male contemporary artists as role models. Job Corps participants are typically at-risk and low-income, transitioning from youth to adulthood, receiving career training and developing leadership skills. Art Corps and WOTR! is a perfect fit for the partnership with arts education and training. MOCA's WOTR! program and Art Corps @ Job Corps serve approximately 2,000 young women in 2009 through eleven (11) community partners. The program has served over 5,000 since its inception.
