Item Description

"Christmas in England" was the first in what became a famous series of annual limited edition plates. It portrays a traditional Christmas in Old England with family and friends gathered in front of a warm hearth sharing a toast before a holiday meal. Royal Doulton commissioned artist Harry Sales to paint a scene that might have come from a Charles Dickens novel. From the wallpaper on the wall to the tureen on the table, the setting is authentic Dickensian England done with the warmth of interpretation for which the artist is known. Harry Sales holds the British National Diploma for pottery design. He painted the original design which he then modeled into three-dimensional clay from which the fragile mould is made. In establishing the authenticity of the scene, Mr. Sales included tableware of the period, leaded windows, the traditional plum pudding of Christmas in England and even the Pince-nez hanging on its cord from the patriarch's neck. The deep sculpture emphasizes each brick in the fireplace, each dish on the Christmas Table and the holly leaves gracing the fireplace. Each plate is hand-cast and hand-painted at Royal Doulton's studios of John Beswick in England. Completely hand-painted in 15 colors. First of limited edition series, 8" square. A lovely piece to display on wall, or in china cabinet. Mint condition.
