Item Description

Women Astronauts Holding One of Original Woman Suffrage Flags in Space Picture

An original Woman Suffrage flag (borrowed from the archives of the Sewall Belmont House collection) was flown aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, on the first docking mission to the International Space Station STS-96, May 27 – June 6, 1999.
During this 9-day mission, the crew conducted atmospheric and solar studies.
Three of the seven members of the Discovery crew were female. These women astronauts- Tamara Jernigan, Ellen Ochoa, and Julie Payette – honored the women’s rights movement, which had made their participation in NASA possible, by displaying a very special artifact of the Woman Suffrage Movement.
The Discovery crew sent the National Women’s History Project a pictorial gift of their mission.  It is a framed and matted poster with photos of the launch and images from space.  Also included are photos of the entire crew, the female astronauts holding the Woman Suffrage flag, and the crew patch.  It remains one of our most treasured artifacts.
In addition to this treasure, the White House sent a duplicate(8"x10") photo of the female astronauts holding the Woman Suffrage flag. We are including that photo in this special auction.
