A DAY IN HOLLYWOOD, A NIGHT IN THE UKRAINE
1980
USHERETTE/GINO
Follow me down the aisle of the Grauman’s Chinese Theater. So begins this loving tribute to 1930’s Hollywood directed by Tommy Tune. Broadway’s favorite Priscilla Lopez, hot off her success as Diana in A Chorus Line won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. In Act 1 against Tony Walton’s brilliant set of Chinese red deco theater lobby doors each actor wore a slightly different 1930’s style usher uniform from Hollywood’s Grauman’s Chinese Theater. The costumes were designed by another original A Chorus Line cast member, Michel Stuart. Our bear is dressed in blue-grey wool crepe outfit with 30’s cut trousers (think Dietrich) and a Mandarin deco tabard. The costume is trimmed in gold bullion braid, handmade Chinese red bias binding, and tiny gold nail heads, and is emblazoned by the distinctive GCT embroidered logo in Chinese red and gold. Her face is framed by dark curls, and she has been lovingly rouged. She wears black patent leather Mary Janes, and we are sure you will agree “She’s the best!”
