EGUNGUN
Our multi-layered Egungun bear is made up of multiple fabrics many of which came from the actual Broadway costume. The base pants and sleeves of this colorful traditional African festival costume are made from a printed spandex made up of abstract patterns. This was completed prior to adding the remaining layers of the costume. A shoulder harness supports a multi-layered skirt which consists of raffia groupings, curled spandex fringe and small teardrop shaped fabric pieces bordered with contrasting jagged trim. A buckram head piece has been adorned with more raffia leaving space in the front for the bear to look out. Our bear has then been topped off with multiple tendrils composed of braided spandex left from the original base costume and additional raffia. “Egungun” refers to the selective spirits of the ancestral dead and our small Egungun represents one very important spirit, whose afrobeat music is featured in the musical which tells the story of this legendary musician’s controversial life…the life of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
