MYRTA-QUEEN OF THE WILIS
From the classic American Ballet Theatre production of Giselle, Myrta is the Queen of the vengeful Wilis, and holds ultimate power over this magical sisterhood. Wearing an elegant handmade crown of rhinestones and flowers, Myrta rules the ghost-like Wilis, virgins who have died before their wedding day. They seek out young men whom they force to dance until their hearts give out. Costumed in a gently draping white tulle skirt and a pair of silky ballet-pink satin toe shoes, used to trample men’s hearts, our Myrta bear sparkles with otherworldly power. She boasts a delicately boned and beaded, form-fitting bodice trimmed in flowers for her wedding day that will never be. ABT has produced Giselle since the 1940’s and in their most recent version, presented at the Metropolitan Opera House in 2009, the role was danced by Principal Dancer Veronika Part.
