Item Description
This First Day of Issue envelope and stamp has a picture of Thoreau's cabin at Walden Pond. The envelope was printed for the Thoreau Foundation of the Thoreau Lyceum. At the time this 5 cent stamp was issued by the Post Office in Concord on July 12, 1967 its depiction of Thoreau by Leonard Baskin was controvercial, to say the least. Mary Sherwood called it a "desecretion" -- "a disregard for good taste and historic appreciation...." But over the years Thoreauvians have learned to appreciate it. The donor will pay the cost of shipping.
