Item Description
"Avedon Fashion: 1944-2000" (Abrams/International Center of Photography, $100, 60 pounds). Before photographer Richard Avedon (1923-2004) developed his signature style of black-and- white portraiture, he toiled as a fashion photographer documenting haute couture in Paris cafes and street corners.
By the time he joined Vogue in 1966, Avedon was the most famous fashion photographer in the world. He continued shooting fashion -- for Versace and the New Yorker magazine -- even as his subjects expanded to migrant workers and celebrities such as Monroe and Andy Warhol.
Still, his witty fashion images, including those of model Dovima posing in Dior with elephants and in Balenciaga with a hairy pooch, are among his most unforgettable.
