Item Description
Inspired by geological forms and river shale, adorned with a lizards and impressions of fossils and skeletons, this ceramic box and lid opens to reveal a geode-like surprise of colorful blue and green melted glass and glaze. The interior is glazed with found green and blue glass mixed with glazes to create a wet looking interior that represents a hidden, life sustaining pool of water, a treasure in the desert. All trilobite images are impressions in clay of actual fossils.
The Lizard Rock Box is part of a signed numbered series by Tucson artist Joy Holdread, who focuses on custom designed & handmade sculptural items of stoneware clay with strong landscape and geological themes. Approximately 2.5" deep and 7" wide.
Artist's Statement: "The desert, its colors, textures and shapes strongly influence my works with clay. Hand crafted clay tiles echo Arizona landscapes. Vessels of clay, repeat the theme as wrapped around landscapes. Geological processes fascinate me and inspire rock like forms made into boxes with lizards dancing across the surface. Lizards appear painted, sculpted or in relief on or in a wide variety of pieces: Large tile murals, jewelry, bowls, mugs, coffee table sculptures with water like pools of melted glass. Lizards and impressions of fossils have taken on a life of their own in my studio."
