Item Description

This paper-mache dog sculpture, "Beautiful Drever", is a one-of-a-kind creation by artist Nancy Winn of Sonoma County. The piece measures 12" long x 5" high x 9" wide. Winn twists recycled materials into whimsical animal shapes to help keep her balance in a sometimes tilting world. She begins with a sturdy wire armature wrapped with newspaper and tape. Then crumpled newspaper is attached to the armature with more tape to create and shape body, head and legs. Once the critter's pose is achieved, several layers of newspaper strips wet with glue are applied. After the newspaper has dried, another layer of glue-soaked pieces from torn grocery sacks are added to strengthen the animal. The papier-mâché pieces are finished with paint, wood stains, decoupage, or salvaged paper. Unruly and challenging critters may require more than twenty hours of handwork over many weeks.

Winn has extensive recognition and exhibition credits for her lovingly crafted canine creations. She was awarded Niche Fiinalist 2010 in the recycled category.  Niche is a publication for fine craft retailers and galleries in the US.
