Item Description
The Secret History of “Weeds” or What Women Need To Know About Their History
By Julia Hughes Jones
“Girls begin to talk and to stand on their feet sooner than boys because weeds always grow up more quickly than good crops.”
Martin Luther 1533
Luther’s reflection is the echo of ancient philosophical and theological conjecture about female inferiority. Throughout history little value has been placed on females other than as child bearers and hearth keepers, or, in reality, as a support structure for the deeds and misdeeds of the men in their lives. Jones book reveals through carefully selected stories what women have faced in history and how they have overcome the secondary status assigned to the female in world cultures.
Julia Hughes Jones, a pioneering woman politician in Arkansas, is the author of The Secret History of “Weeds” or What Women Need To Know About Their History. She is a motivational speaker whose speeches have been excerpted or published in entirety in books, magazines, and as online supplemental material since 1992. Her speech about the Secret History of Women recently was awarded Honorable Mention in the Cicero Speechwriting Awards 2009-2010.
