Item Description
The poster, by artist John Sokol, was created in 1981 and was used to promote The Thoreau Quarterly. The image was published in the Quarterly in the Winter 1982, Vol. 14, #1 issue. The words of Thoreau's Resistance to Civil Government are arranged to form a portrait of Thoreau. The size is 22" x 28 1/2".
Here is what the Editor, John Dolan wrote about the portrait:
John Sokol has created a striking portrait of Thoreau. His remarkable drawing suggests an unexpected interpretation of the phrase "verbal sketch." With painstaking care, he has arranged the words of Thoreau's "Resistance to Civil Government" to form an image of the author's face."
