Item Description
Have you ever wanted to make your own olive oil? Well, here's your chance. Two fruiting olive trees, Olea europaea 'Frantoio' and Olea europaea 'Leccino' are available to grace your drought tolerant landscaping and provide olives for pressing into olive oil or eating.
'Frantoio' makes the classic small to medium sized olive tree that is indicative of the olive groves around the foothills of Tuscany. It grows in semi-pendulous fashion, with dark green-gray leaves. The olives make a lovely, fruity aromatic oil. The fruit also makes a good table olive after curing, with a slightly nutty flavor. It is a self-fertile tree, as well as a good pollinator.
‘Leccino' with its open semi-pendulous habit is a popular and widely planted form. It is easy to cultivate and is tolerant of a wide range of conditions. Oil from this olive tree is more delicate than Frantoio, and the small to medium fruit is also used for table olives. This is a self-sterile tree and so should be planted with a good pollinator.
Item Special Note
The two should be planted within 2 blocks of each other or other fruiting olive trees for cross-pollination to occur.
