Item Description
Materials/ Description of Process: Pastels, markers, colored pencils, tracing paper, Photoshop. Mr. Hackmann's 8th graders devoted critical thought to the iconic Mickey Mouse. 8th graders read an article about Disney's push to re-imagine Mickey Mouse for the older generation. After discussing ways of pushing the limits on what kind of character Mickey Mouse could be and what type of character Middle Schoolers would "buy into" they designed their own versions of Mickey Mouse, using a graphic design technique. With tracing paper, they traced parts of Mickey they wanted to keep, such as his "signature" ears and then redesigned the rest. Students then coated the backs of the rough drafts with crayon and transferred the drawings on to finished white paper. Students then outlined their designs and added color with oil pastels, markers, or colored pencils. The final product is a 24 x 36 collective of all drawings on a larger poster created by Photoshop. Their work reflects many ideas that students were working on in reading, writing, and graphic design.
