Item Description
Four people will enjoy a true behind-the-scenes tour of Concord's Old Manse and its grounds, personally accompanied by historic site director Dr. Tom Beardsley. In this special tour you will visit the historic attic, or garret, and view 5 rooms that were closed to the public for more than 70 years. These include the Saint's Chamber, where trainee ministers and Harvard students slept, prayed and studied, and where Nathanial Hawthorne's writing on the fireplace surround can still be seen. The winners will also enter the room where famed American Impressionist artist Edward Simmons (1852-1931) slept, and see his early drawings on the bedroom walls. The grounds tour will include the heirloom garden--originally planted by Henry David Thoreau as a wedding gift for the Hawthorns--as well as the barn, the Old North Bridge where the famous battle of April 19, 1775 took place, and the boathouse on the Concord River.
The winner will also enjoy a one-year family membership to the Trustees of Reservations, which includes free or discounted admission to all of the Trustees' properties including Crane Beach, World's End, Rocky Woods, Cape Poge lighthouse, and Notchview, among other benefits.
The winner will also receive a copy of two acclaimed books: "The Peabody Sisters: Three Women Who Ignited American Romanticism," by Megan Marshall, and "Hawthorne in Concord," by Philip James McFarland.
Item Special Note
Outside tour is weather-dependent; winner should call ahead to schedule. Valid through April, 2011.
