Item Description
One of the most difficult of all quilt patterns, New York Beauty, or Rocky Mountains as it is known in the South, demands superb needlework skills to master its complicated curved blocks. This distinctive pattern first appeared in 1858 and 152 years later is still considered the pinnacle of quilting design and finesse. This eyecatching example of Americana in deep claret red, blue and white was hand-stitched by two generations of quilters, the top painstakingly pieced in the 1920s by Ida Seal of Indiana and the quilting and binding completed by Terry Newman Anderson in 1992. The detailed provenance of this family quilt has been embroidered onto the backing. Made of pure cotton, measuring a generous 70 x 78 inches, professionally laundered, and in fresh, crisp, near-mint condition with no visible stains or tears. A bold, beautiful hand-stitched work of art for antique quilt collectors to adorn a bed or to display on a wall.
