Item Description

You are bidding on "THE KING OF CLUBS (THE THUG KING)", measuring 3.5" wide x 5" high (8.75" wide x 9.75" high framed). Materials include paper cut-out black paper with white charcoal, collaged with various vintage papers. It is handsomely framed in black lacquer with 3 dimensional cardboard wave pattern matting.

It has been valued at $200.00.

Funds raised from the sale of this piece will go to the Portland nonprofit: P:EAR.  P:ear seeks to build positive relationships with homeless and transitional youth, ages 15 to 24, through education,  art and recreation to affirm personal worth and create more meaningful and healthier lives. Each year their programs serve more than 350 homeless and transitional young people.

John Shlichta is a recent transplant to Portland, via Seattle, and New York City. He grew up in the Los Angeles harbor town of San Pedro, California, where the influence of his large and wacked family, allowed him to cultivate a love of all things abstract, overlooked, abandoned and forgotten. His work for this project gives a small glimpse into his somewhat recent obsession with SCHERENSCHNITTE...or paper cutting...which began over three years ago with several productions of shadow puppet plays for family and friends. You can glimpse more of his work through his blog:brilliant-light.blogspot.com, or stay tuned for an upcoming show here in Portland later this year at Coffeehouse Northwest based on his life long interest in the fairytale.

Item Special Note

THE FINE PRINT:

Please note that the description above was submitted by the artist.  Also note that the image depicted with the listing is the image used in the Portland Project Deck ... which may be slightly different from the original artwork you are bidding on.  The original artwork also may have had additional aspects or features digitally added to prepare it for inclusion in the deck.  In some listings (but not all) we have mentioned differences between the card image and the original artwork, but in all cases you take final responsibility to be comfortable with the piece of art you are bidding on.  If you have any questions about the difference between the image and the original piece, we encourage you to see the actual piece of art in person before you bid (they are all even more incredible live).  In all cases the artwork is ready to hang but the pieces vary in terms of framing, attached hardware, etc.  To find out where you can view the actual artwork, visit www.facebook.com/artinhandpdx or view the home page of the auction where we have all the showings listed.  If you are the winning bidder we will expect you to make arrangements to have your art picked up either between 9-10pm at the closing reception Saturday evening May 22 or over the following couple of days at Splendorporium (3421 SE 21st Ave) between 11am and 5pm.  If you prefer the artwork to be shipped, expect to pay actual packing and shipping costs (which will vary for each item depending the size, framing, etc.) plus a $25 handling fee.  Note that this could get expensive, so we encourage you to make arrangements to have it picked up locally.  Note that we will not pre-calculate packing and shipping. Although the auction requires you to register a credit card to bid, we will NOT automatically bill your card if you are a winning bidder, as we would prefer to collect your payment by check or cash when you pick up your artwork.  You will receive notice from us if you are the winning bidder with your options.
