Item Description
Chrysanne Stathacos, USA, 2006. The Rose Mandala Mirror (of three reflections for His Holiness the Dalai Lama) was created by Chrysanne Stathacos to celebrate His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visit to the University of Buffalo Law School in 2006. As part of a conference entitled Law, Buddhism and Social Change, organized by Professor Rebecca French at the University of Buffalo Law School Library, the artwork was placed at the center of a ring of legal scholars who conversed with the Dalai Lama. The intention was to create an intimate setting for dialogue. It was His Holiness's first visit to a U.S. law school conference and one of the few times he has spoken publicly about legal matters. The links to the conference are: http://www.buffalo.edu/ubreporter/archives/vol38/vol38n5/articles/HHDL_LawConf.html http://www.asianstudies.buffalo.edu/contrib/newsletter/documents/ASN12.2.pdf In November 2009, Stathacos presented the artwork for a second time in the rotunda of the Union Theological Seminary's Institute for Art, Religion & Social Justice in New York City for the exhibition Compassion, curated by A.A. Bronson. The exhibition was reviewed by The New York Times critic Holland Cotter, and The Rose Mandala Mirror (of three reflections for HHDL) was singled out by Mr. Cotter. Please see the link to the review below. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/01/arts/design/01lookahead2.html Here is the statement of purpose of the Compassion exhibition from the press release: In today's shifting political, economic, and ecological landscape, the need for compassion has never been greater compassion understood as mutual interdependence, knowledge of self and others, and concern for human flourishing. This kind of compassion requires seeking to know all aspects of human reality, being open to truths beyond our everyday experience and embedded in it. Artists often awaken compassion most profoundly. They inform our imaginations such that we can envision our interconnectedness in ways that mere didacticism cannot achieve. The Rose Mandala Mirror (of three reflections for HHDL) is a part of an ongoing Roses series by the artist. These works vary in size and are created by placing the petals of hundreds of roses in and above the circular mirrors. The intention is to invite the visitor to sit in contemplation around the work. The artist will go to the location to install the work. The work is professionally crated and can be shipped from NYC. Photographs of its previous installations are included.
