BIOGRAPHY
The gestural paintings of Charles Karubian are reminiscent of the Old Masters, depicting genre scenes and classical portraits with a dark palette. His combination of historical references and contemporary subject matter brings our perspective on today's society into tighter focus, to haunting effect. Since his inaugural solo exhibition in 1999 at Black Dragon Society in Los Angeles, Karubian has had numerous solo shows, with his most recent at Parker Jones, Los Angeles. His work has also appeared recently in two exhibitions at the MBFA Yellow House in Potts Point, Australia: Strangeland (2010) and A Fragile State (2009). Karubian received his MFA from UCLA and his BFA from San Francisco Art Institute.

Curated by Joshua Aster and Kristin Calabrese.
