BIOGRAPHY
Carlee Fernandez's artwork typically transforms natural objects (e.g. taxidermic animals or human bodies) into a single new form that challenges the boundaries of singularity and formal distinction. In her own words, "natural beauty, spatial environments and dark humor" are the fundamental concerns of her artwork. Fernandez's work is included in the permanent collections of LACMA and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art and it has been featured in solo exhibitions at ACME (2010) and Acuna-Hansen Gallery (2001-06, various) in Los Angeles and Platform Gallery in Seattle (2007 & 2004). Fernandez is a recipient of the 2008 California Community Foundation Fellowship. Her work has been reviewed in Frieze and Art in America, and has been published in Art Tomorrow and Sculpture Today. Fernandez's recent group exhibitions include Intelligent Design at UCR Sweeney Art Gallery in Riverside, Acclimatation at Villa Arson Art Centre in Nice and LACMA's traveling exhibition Phantom Sightings: Art after the Chicano Movement. She received her MFA from Claremont Graduate University. She currently lives in Los Angeles where she is represented by Acme Gallery.
