Item Special Note
My mother was a reader. One of my fondest memories is of her, sitting in her chair, with a stack of books nearby. She always had 3 or 4 going and would often share her excitement. Many of these books were from our local library. When I was old enough to take the subway by myself, one of my favorite places to go was the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue. There is something almost sacred about a place that contains so much knowledge, adventure, insight and fun. For it to have a positive impact on our society, it must be free and open and accessible. That is why this fight to save the branch libraries is so important. It’s not for convenience or to maintain a status quo. It’s as important as clean air and water and a responsive government.
