Item Description

Long-time Evanston resident, John L. Foster, poet and translator, has donated a signed, out-of-print but new copy of his early anthology of ancient Egyptian literature.  With a long-standing coterie of friends and fans in Evanston as well as a world-wide reputation as an expert in ancient Egyptian literature as literature, Prof. Foster has spent a career translating ancient Egyptian literature that makes it accessible to non-specialist audiences while staying true to the meaning and structure of the original texts.  This anthology contains examples of many ancient Egyptian literary genres and includes a sailor’s tall-tale to rival Sinbad’s, ancient hymns to Egyptian gods and goddesses, a spell or two, and a brief excerpt from a wisdom text to advise on the best way to succeed in the world – this one from 2350 B.C.E.!  With an accessible introduction that places Egyptian literature in its greater literary context as well as its Egyptian one, Echoes of Egyptian Voices is a welcome addition to a well-rounded personal library and a joy to read.
