Item Description
This one-of-a-kind original work by Donald Gerola was created out of acrylic paint, industrial pigment and sand on a stable, wooden board.
"Ectosphere" is a pure abstraction, but reminiscent of a sheltering sky and sustaining earth. In nature, molecules move, gently yielding themselves into balanced patterns that quietly support life.
Unlike paint alone, paint with sand dances with the gradually shifting angles of daylight; the grains sparkle intensely, presenting an ever-changing appearance.
Donald is best known for monumental sculpture - huge pieces that may be centerpieces in public parks, for example. Working in former industrial space in Pawtucket, RI, his work is seen throughout the country and was the subject of the documentary "Struggle in Steel."
