Item Description

This striking print of four locomotives of the New York Central System is a reproduction of artist Leslie Ragan's 1946 New York Central calendar artwork, entitled For the Public Service. Ragan became especially well-known for painting trains and today originals of his posters have become highly collectible.

Pictured are a conventional steamer, a then-modern diesel-electric locomotive, and two examples of the NYC's Hudson-class steam streamliners including one that pulled the famous 20th-Century Limited before and after WW II. The setting is Chicago's LaSalle Street Station, with the Windy City's Board of Trade Building dominating the background. It's evocative of the publicity/advertising art of what's been called "the machine age".

Donated by a friend of the station, this is a striking, powerful, iconic work and the frame works ideally with the strong imagery presented. It was purchased at the Rag and Bone Bindery in Newport in 2004.

Item Special Note
