Item Description
This large tapa cloth (Fijian? Tongan? Samoan?) is mounted on canvas covered wood. Measures approximately 41 x 51 inches.
Tapa cloth is made from the bark of the paper mulberry. Just as wood can have knots from tree branches, a finished tapa surface is cleaner and with fewer holes if the tree has fewer branches. Making the cloth is a time consuming process. It is scraped and beaten to soften it, then dried. The dyes used to make the individual designs are natural.
Item Special Note
