Help support the Nantucket Historical Association.
Umiak boats have been used as part of Alaskan whale hunts for thousands of years. This umiak was constructed by skin-boat builder Corey Freedman and volunteers in the side yard of the Nantucket Whaling Museum over the course of two weeks in May 2010. The boat was made using many of the same methods that are used by the Iñupiat Indians. It began with the construction and assembly of a wood frame that was then covered with a skin of ballistic nylon. This unique boat is 25 feet in length and can be adapted to have a sail attached.
