Item Description
In Frankish mythology Alberich, or Oberon, is the king of the fairies (or elves, or dwarves, depending on the version) who -- among other duties -- must guard the treasure of the Nibelungen, a royal family. The tale inspired one of Wagner's operas. This 1901 woodcut engraving is of a painting by the 19-Century Austrian Hans Markart. In mint condition, it measures 5 ¾" x 8 7/8"; overall dimensions are 14" x 16" in a silver frame which incorporates designs. It was donated by Stephan and Julia Brigidi of the Bristol Workshops in Photography, Bristol, RI.
