Born in Soho, based in Soho and creates in Soho, Colette Malouf is a true New Yorker that grew up amidst the emerging art and design scene of downtown Manhattan. An edgy influence perhaps, but Colette is a child of fashion that was raised on couture from her family’s glamorous lounge wear business, “Perfect Negligee” where ostrich feathers and jeweled caftans ruled. From the street to high fashion, Colette melds the two influences bringing artistic elegance to everything she designs.
Colette’s first fashion hit was a hair accessory, aptly named the Malouf Pouf, and it spread like wildfire. The year was 1987, as she watched her inventive accoutrement take off – 100,000 of the sumptuous, fabric-swaddled ponytail holders sold in the first year. By year two, her business earned $1 million in revenue, and she was featured in New York Magazine as one of fashion’s young rising stars. Constant innovation and fresh styling ideas such as “the stick twist”, “the figure 8 twist” and “the chignon twists”; the “maneframe” (a scarf-like pony) and a set of flip books (old movie style) earned her the title of “the undisputed queen of hair accessories” according to New York Magazine.
