Item Description

19th-Century New York artist Alonzo Chappel is perhaps best known for his paintings of people and events during the American Revolution, but he also depicted earlier eras of American history. Here, in a print produced by Johnson, Fry and Company, Chappel brings to life the momentous 1636 landing of Roger Williams in Providence - the birth of the true separation of church and state.

This item was donated by Stephan and Julia Brigidi of the Bristol Workshops in Photography, Bristol, RI.

Item Special Note

The print, which measures 5 5/8" x 7 3/8", is in fair condition, with a repaired tear between Williams and the Narragansetts greeting him. Matted in museum board, it measures 14" x 16" overall, in its gold wood frame.
