Item Description
This beautiful oval platter is a fabulous representation of famous local artist Donald Schnell's work! Measuring approx. 17" x 13", it has an glazed white center and is adorned with sea life, shell and petroglyph imprints around the edge, rimmed in the classic Schnell blue-green glaze.
The Donald Schnell Studio on St. John creates a variety of exciting, handcrafted ceramics, from water fountains, lights, signs, planters and vases to musical windchimes and dinnerware.
The Studio's creations capture the feel of the islands. Coral sand and melted glass reproduce the vibrant colors of the rocks and water of the Caribbean. From raw clay blended with Virgin Islands coral sand each individual item is created by hand or with the potter's wheel. Each piece is allowed to dry then fired to 1600 degrees.
After the first firing each piece is then hand buffed, stained and glazed before re-firing to 2300 degrees. This produces the final, extremely hard ceramic and exciting glazes Schnell Studio is known for. Of course no lead is ever used in Schnell pottery.
