From the artist:
This project started when I was asked to perform for my daughter's first grade class. I told 'em all I do is blues, and they said that would be fine. I developed a short presentation on the Piedmont Blues, that upbeat kind of country ragtime style of blues music popular in North Carolina and Virigina in the 1920's and '30's. That music has been a big part of my life and I wanted to share a bit of how it makes me feel.
Some time later my daughter asked me to take to school a CD of my playing. This was quite an honor, and I knew that once the molders of consumer preferences got her attention, such a chance might never come again. I immediately put my other projects on hold and got to work.
In some cases I've written new songs in the style of particular artists, but with language and themes young folks might related to. I tried to draw on some of the experiences of my daughter and her friends.
In "Oh Well, Oh Well," I imagined how a young Blind Boy Fuller might have shrugged off a bad day at the playground. In "Roll All Over These Blues," I imagined young Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee rolling their blues away on roller skates, bicycles, and those little silver scooters you see everywhere.
I hope these songs may impart to children some of the spirit and strenth of these artists and their music.
