Media:

Assorted selection of hand-cut green stained glass for lotus leaf with mottled murky type dark- hued pieces to represent pond’s edge. Sand-grouted with blend of tints to create an effective accent hue on top of a copper framed, wood-backed mirror with metal hanging assembly and cushioned feet for table side use.

Stacked hand-cut Lotus flower pieces are an assortment of white to mottled white to a clear stained glass faceted piece, along with three pieces of lace agate, all stacked for illusion of petaled flower floating on pond with mirror representing the reflective water of emotion. Illusion of Lotus flower is completed by more stacked slivers and rounds of hand-cut orange-yellow stained glass topped with a few up-lifting golden beads.

Artist Statement:

After attending an history of art lecture where I learned that Claude Monet actually painted over 350 versions of his famous waterliles, not to mention how many he tore up or destroyed when he was not satisfied with the result, I found myself driving by a pond filled with the first annual blooms of absolutely nature’s best outstandingly beautiful cream colored lotus flowers blooming in a really gorgeous pond. My vehicle made an immediate -- Ert! as I pulled to the side of the road. With camera in hand, I began clicking away at such beauty. Next thing I knew five other folks had joined me and one was shouting to me, “come over here, did you get it from this angle. Did you see that one.” And another, “ I can’t send these photos on fast enough to my daughter and her art pals.” At this point I just had to chuckle and say to myself, “If Monet could paint over 350 versions of his waterlilies, and now some folks just make giclee copies of their originals and sell them for nearly or close to the same price of Monet’s originals during his life-time and others here are just as excited about this fabulous beauty of nature as you, I think it is okay for you, Helen, to take about thirty-five or so digital photos of this gorgeous pond flower explosion.”

Next thing I know, I’m at our weekly mosaic gathering with Rosemary Rizzo, our area mosaic guru, as she informs us about a Doctor’s without Borders call for donation pieces. Having met several of these doctors and chatted with them about their experiences during my newspaper years, I was all ears. I was just finishing another project as she spoke and yet I found I had already formulated in my mind what I would submit for this request --- just had to go home to measure that mirror to make sure it did not exceed 10”. Sure enough the copper with wood base mirror is an 8” round and my finished piece is now 8” round x 1 1/2” tall from base of mirror to tip of the golden beads.
