About Mary

Mary Stewart is a fiber artist. She has been sewing since she was ten years old. She sewed her way through high school and college, keeping her wardrobe current with fashion trends. A BA in Fine Arts from Rosemont College helped her develop her sense of design, color and texture. After graduation, she became art director for a Philadelphia printing firm but never gave up her trusty sewing machine.

Mary relocated to Cape May from Philadelphia in 1986 and began working for the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC). She continued to develop her sewing skills and her passion for unique pieces soon led her to design and create Victorian costumes. She began creating one-of-a-kind purses from her stock of tapestry fabric scraps. Mary scours antique shops for vintage buttons and trims and looks for unusual fabrics to supplement her stash. In recent years, Mary has expanded into knitted pieces as well.

“I enjoy the challenge of taking two dimensional raw materials and creating three dimensional works. Sewing really is a sculptural art, but it’s also like painting to me. My fabric and yarn stash is my paint box.  Each piece is unique and I work largely without patterns, letting the texture and hand of the fabric or yarn dictate what it will become. I always have a project waiting in my knitting bag or at my sewing machine. Working with fiber lets me unwind and relax and gets my creative juices flowing.”
