The state of Orissa, also known as the land of temples, is in the southeast coast of India, and is known for its rich heritage in art and architecture. The sculptural images of Orissa have one of the most distinctive regional styles of India, a style that has developed over hundreds of years and is still evolving today. The cutouts on the bottom indicate that this piece was likely used in a procession.
