Artist Statement:

For “Comfort and Joy” I considered the healing properties of tea as well as the emotional and social benefits which always accompany a communal drink shared by family, friends and healers.  Doctors Without Borders is indeed such a healing organization.  I personally love the bravery of all of the physicians who bring comfort, joy and hope to people all over our planet.

My background as a textile designer, as well as my years spent on wall-covering design teams translates into a love of pattern and color.  I also enjoy whimsy as well as the magic and poetry, which hover around even the most mundane of objects.  However, most of my pieces, including “Comfort and Joy”, begin with a realistic drawing, very much grounded in ordinary experience.

Mosaics are about fragments.  In the case of “Comfort and Joy”, those fragments include, vitreous tile, stained glass, rhinestones and glass cabochons.  The andimento (the flow of the tiles) underlines the magic wafting out from the humble offer of comfort.
