Artist Statement:

“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others”   ~Pericles

Hoping to give my mosaic for donation a more international flair I asked for coins from friends and coworkers and was given many coins from over 30 countries.  Some coins were souvenirs from travel, some were from a friend’s homeland, and one was brought here in the 70’s as a remembrance of war.

I was pleased to participate because I think that Doctors Without Borders perform a great service, while knowing that they cannot always affect sweeping change they do go in and perform what they can to help.

I have always enjoyed working with metals and glass, I find the uniqueness of coins from various countries fascinating, and some of them are truly beautiful and portable works of art.  The shiny glass next to the aged coins with their various patinas gives me joy and makes me hope for the future…because no matter how badly some people can treat others, there are some shining individuals who will step up and work towards positive change.
